. During the early 1940s, Motorola developed a backpacked 2 way radio, the Walkie-Talkie and later developed a large hand-held 2 way radio for the US military. This battery powered "Handie-Talkie" (HT) unbelievably was about the size of a man's forearm.
Although the technology has exisited from the 50's when a few people could dial a phone from their vehicles it basically stayed undeveloped until the 60's.
In December 1971, AT&T submitted a proposal for cellular service in December 1971. After years of hearings it was finally approved by the FCC in 1982 when the technology was assigned frequencies for usage.
Suprisingly the first truly handheld Mobile Cell Phone was only first introduced in 2000 as 1G
